CARRIE STROPE - THE GLASS WORKER AND THE CUTTING MACHINE; IDEAS AND PRACTICE
Instructor: Carrie Strope
Join us for a 4-day intensive with Carrie Strope. Carrie has become known for her exciting designs that combine kiln formed glass and cutting machine components. Carrie is the only instructor world-wide that teaches workshops with this intriguing focus!
Working with glass and the kiln offers so many possibilities, even using the electronic cutting machine, aka the Silhouette, the Cricket, and the Cameo. In this exciting workshop, students will explore the different settings on electronic cutting machines for creating stencils, copper inclusions, kiln paper cutouts, No Days Powder Wafers, embossing, sandblasting and etching resist, custom dichroic elements, decals and more.
If you've got one of these machines and want to use it in your glass practice, this class is for you!!
As we learn, students will develop a 6” sculptural block by layering design components created in class utilizing the various materials we've made with our with electronic cutting machines. We’ll walk through the design process; from finding ideas and inspiration to sketching and brainstorming ideas to making elements for incorporating into a multi-layered sculpture. You’re free to let your spirit and the materials lead your design! We’ll explore various methods and materials for creating inclusions to incorporate into our fused glass blocks, discussing approaches for achieving different outcomes as well as editing the composition for clarity and unity, combining materials and methods for achieving texture, pattern, imagery and depth.
Although we’ll be working thick, the concepts used in creating fused glass elements can translate into thinner functional glassware, stained glass and mosaic artwork, as well. You’ll also leave class with a variety of components to take home for your next project.
As an added bonus we’ll also make quick display materials and hang tags on the cutting machines for displaying and marketing your glass creations to add perceived value to your pieces. Learn the basics of electronic cutting machines and how to create your own images for making stencils, embossing, and more!
